Apple is reportedly developing a new generation of AirPods with built-in infrared cameras, signaling a major shift in how its earbuds interact with the environment, your head movements, and the wider Apple ecosystem.
According to sources familiar with the project, the upcoming AirPods—expected to enter mass production in 2026—will be equipped with tiny IR sensors similar to those found in Face ID. These sensors will track head movement and environmental spatial cues, helping users experience more immersive audio and unlock gesture-based controls.
The new technology is designed to work seamlessly with the Apple Vision Pro, the company’s advanced spatial computing headset. By offloading some environmental scanning and tracking tasks to the earbuds and iPhone, Apple aims to reduce the weight and processing burden on the headset itself—without compromising functionality.
