Apple plans full U.S. iPhone production shift to India as it reduces dependence on China

Apple plans to manufacture all U.S.-bound iPhones in India within three years to reduce dependency on China.

In a major strategic move, Apple Inc. is aiming to source all iPhones sold in the United States from India within the next two to three years, according to reports from the Financial Times. This decision reflects Apple’s broader effort to diversify its manufacturing base and reduce its longstanding reliance on China amid rising geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Sources familiar with the matter said Apple is working closely with its major suppliers—such as Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron—to dramatically expand production capacities in India. This effort is part of Apple’s “China+1” strategy, a supply chain diversification model that seeks to avoid overexposure to political instability, tariffs, and pandemic-related disruptions that have plagued Chinese operations in recent years.

The shift marks one of the most significant supply chain restructurings in Apple’s history. While India already produces a portion of Apple’s devices, mainly for domestic consumption and select export markets, this new plan would scale up production to service the entire U.S. iPhone market, one of Apple’s largest and most critical consumer bases.

Analysts suggest that Apple’s transition to India reflects broader global manufacturing trends. Multinational companies are increasingly viewing India, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia as attractive alternatives to China, offering a combination of favorable labor costs, improving infrastructure, and growing domestic markets.

However, Apple still faces challenges. Scaling up production in India to match the sophisticated quality control, supply chain logistics, and manufacturing scale of China will not be easy. Apple will need to navigate issues such as labor training, regulatory complexities, and ensuring supplier compliance with its strict standards.

Despite these hurdles, Apple’s move signals a  profound shift in global technology supply chains and could have lasting impacts on trade dynamics between the United States, China, and emerging markets like India.

The company has not yet made an official public announcement, but industry insiders expect that Apple will provide more details during its next quarterly earnings call or future product launch events.
