Apple’s global challenge: Designed in the US, but bound to China

Apple’s global expansion faces limits as its reliance on China’s production ecosystem deepens.

Despite growing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China, and increasing pressure to diversify production, Apple remains heavily dependent on China for manufacturing its devices. The article explains that while Apple has started moving some production to countries like India and Vietnam, China still offers unmatched scale, infrastructure, and skilled labor—especially in assembling complex products like the iPhone.

China’s deep integration into Apple’s supply chain is not easily replicable. Massive manufacturing hubs, a trained workforce, and government support make it incredibly difficult for Apple to “just move out.” Even with the risks—ranging from U.S.-China trade friction to strict COVID lockdowns—Apple’s supply chain remains rooted in China for the foreseeable future.

Apple’s dilemma is symbolic of a larger problem faced by many multinational tech firms that rely on China’s manufacturing muscle but face increasing political and ethical pressure to decouple.
