Stop daring us, Akwamu warns Western Togoland rebels
A spokesman for the paramount chief of the Akwamu Traditional Area fires a warning shot at secessionists aiming to encroach on territory in Akwamuman
The chief of staff of the Akwamu Traditional Area (the Gyasiwaahene) has cautioned members of the Western Togoland Movement to desist from carrying out any activities within the Akwamu jurisdiction.
“We want to warn them that this is the last time of coming to Akwamu lands for such claims, because we are here. We were part of the Eastern Province. We were not part of the [United Nations-organised May 1956] plebiscite,” he said.
“And even after us we have Adom, we have Boso, we have Peki who are not part of Western Togoland. So we don’t know how come they have travelled all this far to our land to that,” he said.
Face off
Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday, the Gyasiwaahene, Nana Semanhyia Darko II, told Kojo Mensah they are more prepared to face off with the rebels if they do not heed their advice.
“So this is our message to them because they know Akwamus are warriors, we don’t want to fight without telling the whole world that this people are disturbing us.”
A team of military men have since been deployed to the Akwamu area to avert any attack by the Western Togoland rebels.
The warning follows another attack at the STC Coaches yard in the Volta Region by a group of men believed to be linked to the Western Togoland rebels.
The attackers reportedly set ablaze an STC minibus and beat up drivers who were passing the night in the yard. The attackers then absconded.
Reporting for Asaase News, our Volta regional correspondent, Lambert Attivor, reports that there is uneasy calm in the Ho area following the attack by the criminals, suspected to be rebels linked to the Western Togoland group.
