Ama Daaku to OSP: Focus on real fugitives, not Ofori-Atta

Daaku took a swipe at the OSP’s priorities, arguing that the office should focus on individuals who have truly absconded from justice, citing former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe, who has been on the run for months.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its handling of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s case, describing it as “drama and theatrics.”

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum on Saturday (22 February), Daaku questioned the rationale behind the OSP’s decision to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive, arguing that the former minister had been transparent about his health condition and travel plans.

She further pointed out that the former Finance Minister has never hidden his health struggles from the public, questioning why the OSP would suggest that he was evading justice.

“I don’t think he [OSP] is doing it because he wants to secure his tenure of office because you cannot take him out unless there is a stated misconduct. Otherwise, I don’t really get it when he got up one morning and decided to put up these theatrics. And it is drama.”

“For what I know of him [Ofori-Atta], he is too attached to his Ghanaian heritage and everything Ghanaian. So why would he want to hide because you (OSP) want to ask him questions? she quizzed.

Daaku also took a swipe at the OSP’s priorities, arguing that the office should focus on individuals who have truly absconded from justice, citing former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe, who has been on the run for months.

“Has he [OSP] gone for the proper fugitives like Sedina Tamakloe who have run away? You won’t go and find her for us,” she added.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) initially issued a wanted notice for Ofori-Atta in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct.

The Special Prosecutor’s charges against Ofori-Atta included involvement in the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, termination of the ECG-BXC contract, payments related to the National Cathedral, procurement of ambulances, and Utilisation of the Tax Refund Account.

A fresh statement indicated that Mr Ofori-Atta had communicated to the OSP the date for his voluntary return.

On the back of this, the OSP has removed his name from the wanted list.
