Amponsah to government: Match-fixing must be criminalised in Ghana

Sports analyst Jesse Amponsah believes criminalising match-fixing will help serve as a deterrent and also sanitise the Ghana Premier League

Jesse Amponsah, a sports analyst has suggested to the government to make match-fixing a criminal act in Ghana.

It comes after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) demoted two teams namely Ashanti Gold SC and Inter Allies to Division Two League over the act.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on Tuesday (17 May), Amponsah commended the GFA for taking such a swift action to sanitise the local league.

“One important thing that needs to be done is that we must make match-fixing a criminal act in Ghana. If we do this then people will stop and it will sanitise our sports sector.

“A lot of the games that are match fixed are the ones that are off our television. The FA must work to get all our games on television, this will go a long way to curb this issue,” Amponsah said.

Demotion

Ashanti Gold SC was on Monday demoted to the Division Two League, an official statement from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said.

The decision comes after Ashanti Gold SC was found guilty of match manipulation in their 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League match day 34 game against Inter Allies FC.

A statement issued by the GFA on Monday(16 May) said the decision takes effect from the 2022/2023 league season.

Officials of the club and players who participated in the above mentioned match have also been sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee.
