The members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), including Togo and Chad, are taking part in a military initiative called “Tarhanakale.”
The word translates to “love of the homeland” in Tamasheq, a local language spoken in Mali, Niger, and other Northwest African countries.
The “Tarhanakale”, which is taking place in Niger, includes extensive military training, which includes but is not limited to a series of joint tactical activities, special operations simulations and civil-military cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between soldiers and local communities.
The military training being is conducted in response to the security threats faced within the region, particularly jihadist attacks.
For over ten years, the AES countries have been dealing with violent terrorism. Earlier this year in January, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso withdrew from ECOWAS and one of the main reasons cited for the withdrawal was the lack of support from the regional bloc in terms of counterterrorism efforts.
The “Tarhanakale” exercise which started on the 20 May will conclude on the 3 June.
