“Aliens will not hold positions in future Bawumia government” – Wontumi assures NPP

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has pledged that future appointments under a Dr Mahamudu Bawumia-led government would reward party loyalty and hard work.

Speaking to NPP constituency executives in the Asamankese zone, Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi said that as national chairman, he would oversee the 3,000 appointments promised by Dr Bawumia, corresponding to 10 per constituency, emphasizing that positions would be reserved for those who actively contributed to the party’s efforts.

Caution

He warned that individuals who did not work for the party during its time in opposition – often referred to as “aliens” within party circles – would not be considered for positions in government.

“When I become the national chairman, I will be in charge of the 3,000 appointments… if you don’t work, there will be no appointment for you,” he said. Wontumi added that party members in the diaspora should actively engage with their home constituencies to secure recognition for their contributions.

“Most of these appointees had no idea of how party structure works… this mistake will never happen again,” Wontumi said, reflecting on dissatisfaction after the NPP’s 2024 electoral loss.

Wontumi stressed that active participation at the constituency level, even for members abroad, is essential for stronger party unity and effective party-government relations.

“This will ensure that those who contributed are rewarded, and the party remains cohesive and focused,” he said.

United NPP

At his meeting at the Kwahu enclave, he urged members to close ranks despite internal differences, saying more work was needed to consolidate support after recent electoral setbacks.

Boasiako argued that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was mismanaging the economy, creating an opening for the NPP to return to power if it remained cohesive and disciplined.

“Inasmuch as the national party has done well to unite supporters after the presidential election, much more is needed to completely bring everyone on board,” he said.

“With hard work, commitment and zeal, the NPP stands a better position to reclaim power,” Wontumi further stressed.

Bawumia victory

He also formally signalled his ambition to play a leading role in that effort, presenting himself as a unifying figure capable of mobilising the party’s base.

“This is where I present myself as the servant that you can trust to unite everyone to ensure that we work for the victory of the NPP and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2028,” he said.

The NPP is expected to hold internal elections ahead of the next national polls, with early jockeying for positions already exposing tensions within the party over leadership, strategy and credibility.
