Akufo-Addo to Gonjaland: Let us work together to maintain the beacon of democracy

President Akufo-Addo added that Ghanaians must ensure that democracy reflects on the December general elections

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on chiefs and people of the Savannah Region to work closely with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that Ghana maintains its reputation as the beacon of democracy.

President Akufo-Addo added that Ghanaians must ensure that this reputation is reflected in the December general elections.

“Our country has a world-reserved reputation, is the beacon of democracy and enlighten government on the continent of Africa. Let us all work together to maintain this reputation and increase it with the forthcoming elections” President Akufo-Addo appealed.

Akufo-Addo made this call in Damongo on Saturday (27 April 2024), during the one-year anniversary of the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I on the Yagbon skin.

“I came here to congratulate you and to ask for your support to ensure that the election that we shall be having on 7 December 2024 will be a peaceful one for the people of Savannah, for the people of the North and the people of Ghana,” Akufo-Addo said.

“So that the Ghanaian people can choose the person they want to succeed me as the next president of Ghana and the next house of parliament.

The King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I thanked President Akufo-Addo for the good work he has been doing for the people of the region.

The king appealed to the government for some projects including an office complex for the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs, which according to him is creating anxiety among chiefs most of whom are of advanced ages and require some comfort when sitting for meetings to deliberate on issues.

He called on the government to look into the provision of some interventions such as the establishment of a university in the region, a polytechnic and the execution of the Damongo water project.

He urged all political actors to be circumspect in their utterances in order to have incident-free elections.

The anniversary also coincided with the 28th Annual Congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association, an association made up of all ethnic groups in Gonjaland.

Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I was enskinned the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom in 2023 after the demise of his predecessor the late Yagbonwura Sulemana Jakpa Tuntumba Boressa I.
