Police in Sudan fire tear gas as thousands protest in capital

Sudanese police fired tear gas on Monday (6 December) as thousands of protesters rallied against the military-dominated government near the presidential palace in Khartoum to oppose military rule following a coup in October.

The Sudanese military seized power on 25 October, dissolving the transitional government and arresting dozens of officials and politicians.

The demonstrators marched from various districts of the capital, with many carrying national flags and chanting “no military rule’’ and “the army might betray you but, the street will never betray you’’ according to AFP News Agency.

Among the protesters’ demands are the disbanding of armed groups, the handing over of power to a civilian government and purging officers loyal to al-Bashir (alleged war criminal)

“It is obvious that there is momentum around the country at the deal and other political parties have been voicing their rejection’’ Al Jazeera correspondent said.

The country has recently suffered runaway inflations and embarked on tough economic reforms including slashing subsidies on petrol and diesel.

Security forces have cracked down on the protests since the October coup killing at least 44 protesters and wounding hundreds, according to the Sudan Doctors committee, which tracks protesters deaths.
