Akwatia NPP suffers second loss as MP Ernest Kumi dies of cardiac arrest

Ernest Kumi, MP for Akwatia, Eastern Region (1984-2025)

In a tragic echo of history, Akwatia in the Eastern Region has lost another Member of Parliament, again a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Ernest Kumi died on Monday (7 July) at the age of 40, following what is believed to have been a cardiac arrest.

The sudden passing of Kumi is the second time an NPP MP for the constituency has died in office under tragic circumstances.

In February 2017, the constituency mourned the loss of Kofi Asare, who succumbed to injuries he sustained in a motor crash on the Nkawkaw-Kumasi highway.

Dr Asare, a one-term MP (2009-2013), was travelling from Agogo to Accra when his car collided with a stationary cargo truck. He died instantly; he was 63.

Ernest Kumi (1984-2025): a life cut short

First elected in the December 2024 general election, Ernest Kumi championed health, youth empowerment and infrastructure in the Eastern Region.

Though still in the early days of his tenure, Kumi had already initiated borehole projects, supported education and was advocating for a vocational training centre to be established in Akwatia. He served on the youth and sports and budget committees of Parliament, and was gaining bipartisan respect.

His seat was the subject of a long-drawn-out dispute after last year’s election.

Preliminary medical evaluations suggest Kumi (born 5 December 1984) died of a cardiac arrest. Further details are yet to be released by his family and medical personnel.

The shocking event comes barely eight years after Dr Asare’s demise, underscoring a pattern of tragic loss for the constituency.

Editor’s note: This report was updated on 7 July at 2.30pm to correct the age of the late Ernest Kumi.
