Akufo-Addo to commission Sunyani Airport on 3 August

Sunyani Airport, which lies in the heart of the Bono Region, was shut down in March 2015 after the runway developed challenges

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to commission the first phase of the rehabilitated Sunyani Airport on Wednesday (3 August 2022).

Sunyani Airport, which is located in the heart of the Bono Region, was shut down in March 2015 after the runway developed challenges, making the facilities non-conducive for flights.

Rehabilitation work began in February 2019. Progress was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the airport has undergone renovation to structures including the terminal and tarmac.

The airport was rehabilitated at a cost of GHC50 million.

DAA Construction Ltd built the surrounding wall. Resources Access Ltd, for its part, built the runway. The runway has been extended from the initial 1,280 metres to 1,400 metres.

On Tuesday (19 July 2022), the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, inspected the facility to ascertain work done so far. He said the second phase of the rehabilitation will commence soon after the commissioning of the first phase.

Ofori Asiamah expressed the hope that the airport will help meet Ghanaians’ transportation needs.

In a speech to reporters during the minister’s inspection tour, Pamela Djamson-Tettey, the managing director of Ghana Airports Company Ltd, said the revamped airport will help generate revenue for the company.
