Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is in Bangladesh as part of a Commonwealth Observer Group monitoring preparations for the country’s parliamentary election and referendum scheduled for 12 February.
The high-level delegation arrived in the capital, Dhaka, to begin assessing the political and electoral environment ahead of voting day.
As part of the assignment, the observers are engaging with election authorities and a broad range of stakeholders to examine whether conditions are in place for a transparent, inclusive, and credible poll.
Akufo-Addo confirmed the arrival of the observer mission on Sunday, 8 February, indicating that preliminary engagements had already started.
The Commonwealth Observer Group is holding consultations with representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, the media, as well as youth and women’s groups, as part of efforts to gain insight into the country’s electoral landscape.
The mission will observe developments before, during, and after the polls and is expected to issue a statement on its findings in line with the Commonwealth’s election observation guidelines.
