Akufo-Addo cuts the sod for construction of multiple health-care facilities in Accra

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut the sod for construction of multiple health facilities in the Greater Accra Region. The projects are a maternity/gynaecological centre and a nephrology and kidney transplant centre, both at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, as well as the rebuilding of La General Hospital.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the maternity/gynaecological centre and nephrology and kidney transplant centre at Korle-Bu, President Akufo-Addo said completion of the works will significantly reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in Ghana.

“The government has secured an amount of €145.22 million from Standard Chartered Bank to cover the cost of the projects,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The 12-storey maternity block will have a complete functional package for the delivery of maternal services with the following components: 400-bed capacity, 20 labour delivery rooms, a 100-seater waiting area, 26 recovery wards, 18 treatment rooms, 24 consulting rooms, seven theatres, IVF services, ten-room accommodation for new mothers, 32-seater restaurant with a preparation area and an emergency unit with its own operating theatres,” the president announced.

“Indeed, upon completion, the centre will be the first public facility to deliver in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services in the country,” he said.

Rebuilding La General Hospital

At the sod-cutting ceremony for reconstruction of La General Hospital, President Akufo-Addo observed that the redevelopment has been occasioned by a report from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) which showed that the old five-storey structure was no longer fit for purpose.

“This redevelopment project is being financed by a credit facility from Standard Chartered Bank of the United Kingdom, with an export credit guarantee from Sinosure from the People’s Republic of China to the tune of €68 million with an insurance cover of €3.86 million,” the president said.

“Upon completion, it will be transformed into a 160-bed facility. It will be fitted with an outpatient department, inpatient wards, maternal and neonatal services, surgical unit with four theatres, accident and emergency department, public health department, pharmacy unit, laboratory, administration, imaging area with CT scan, X-ray room, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, mammography units, physiotherapy unit and a mortuary,” he announced.

Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu told guests at the sod-cutting ceremony that, with the development of hospitals all over the country, the phenomenon of health workers seeking to change their postings from other locations to the largest cities will no longer hold sway.

“The biggest challenge facing the Health Ministry is the reluctance of health workers to serve in facilities outside the big cities of Accra, Kumasi and, to some extent, Takoradi.

“Let me serve notice that this phenomenon will no longer be countenanced, as the country stands the risk of losing out on achievement of the much-talked-about ‘universal health coverage’,” the Health Minister said.
