Norweigian veterinary institute facilitates histopathology training program on fish health

This initiative aims to equip Ghanaian technicians and veterinary fish doctors with the skills and resources necessary to conduct histopathological analyses locally, thereby reducing reliance on foreign laboratories for sample analysis

Kofitsyo Sewornu Cudjoe, a senior advisor on fish health and welfare in collaboration with the Norwegian veterinary institute, has facilitated a histopathology training program.

This initiative aims to equip Ghanaian technicians and veterinary fish doctors with the skills and resources necessary to conduct histopathological analyses locally, thereby reducing reliance on foreign laboratories for sample analysis.

Cudjoe explained the significance of histopathology in complementing existing diagnostic services, stating, “Histopathology samples, such as organs like liver, spleen, kidney, and brain, are crucial for understanding the health status of fish populations.”

“By conducting these analyses locally, we can expedite the diagnostic process and improve our ability to respond to fish health issues effectively.”

Traditionally, fish samples requiring histopathological analysis were sent to the veterinary institute in Norway, resulting in delays and increased costs.

However, through the donation of histopathology equipment to the veterinary school in Ghana, courtesy of Cudjoe and his team, this bottleneck is set to be addressed.

The training program, facilitated by experts from the Veterinary Institute in Norway, focuses on familiarizing Ghanaian technicians with the equipment and procedures involved in histopathological analysis.

On the long-term impact of the program, Cudjoe said, “At the end of this training, we expect to take at least three technicians back to Norway, where they will gain hands-on experience and further refine their skills. Upon their return, they will play a pivotal role in establishing our lab as a Ghanaian national reference facility for fish health management.”
