31-year-old graduate wins Best Farmer prize in Volta Region

The new Volta Best Farmer and owner of Vokia Farms in Agortime-Ziope, Vozbeth Kofi Azumah is into agricultural production, poultry, packing and vegetable production

Vozbeth Kofi Azumah was announced the overall Best Farmer in the Volta Region this year as Ghana celebrated Farmers’ Day on Friday (2 December).

The 31-year-old owner of Vokia Farms in Agortime-Ziope, Azumah is into agricultural production, poultry, packing and vegetable production.

He received a Motor King tricycle, farming inputs, a king-sized bed and a certificate of recognition as his prize.

Speaking at the event, the Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa, commended farmers for their efforts to make sure that Ghanaians always have food on the table.

“As a result of the efforts being put in by our gallant farmers, especially in our region, I can state without any equivocation that we are nowhere near a food crisis situation,” the minister said.

“Indeed, this region shall continue to lead in rice production, as revealed by data from the Statistics, Research and Information Directorate (SRID) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

“The revelation is an indication of the tremendous contribution of farmers from this region to the food security position of our dear nation, Ghana.

“Another area worth adding value to in our agricultural landscape as a region is the tomato industry,” Dr Letsa said. “The tomato industry, in my estimation, presents this region with another fine opportunity to make our farmers and industry players the creators of a universe of opportunities in value addition in the tomato value chain.

“I wish to make a humble appeal, or rather throw a challenge, to the Association of Ghana Industries, Volta chapter, and the Regional Department of Agriculture to carefully consider how the region could take advantage of the government’s programme dubbed the ‘GhanaCARES Obaatanpa’ project, which is ready to assist bankable proposals to come to fruition in areas such as tomato processing,” Letsa said.

The overall Best Farmer said initially his immediate family rejected his idea of going into farming when he graduated from university with a first degree because they saw it as a low-paying job.

Azumah called on Ghanaian youth to consider going into farming instead of looking solely to the government for employment opportunities.
