Air travel costs in West Africa to drop 25% from January 2026

ECOWAS Member States will reduce the cost of air travel starting 1 January 2026, following a decision made at the December 2024 Summit in Abuja.

Under the new Supplementary Act on Aviation Charges, Taxes and Fees, all member countries will eliminate air transport taxes and reduce passenger and security charges by 25 percent.

The move addresses concerns that high flight costs have limited tourism, trade, and the movement of people and goods within the region.

The ECOWAS Commission will monitor the reform through a Regional Air Transport Economic Oversight Mechanism.

The policy is set to result in lower airfares, higher passenger numbers, stronger regional airlines, and greater regional integration.
