Ghanaian highlife legend Agya Koo Nimo has expressed a heartfelt wish to perform alongside Dancehall star Shatta Wale before he passes on.
In a touching video shared by broadcaster Kafui Dey on 11 June, the 94-year-old icon revealed his admiration for the younger artist and his long-held desire to meet and collaborate with him.
“I want to do one show before I die. I’m 94. It is my wish to always see you in person. So I’m happy I’ve had the opportunity to talk to you,” Agya Koo Nimo said during a phone conversation with Shatta Wale.
The video, which has since gone viral, captures a rare and moving exchange between two generations of Ghanaian music. Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., responded warmly to the elder’s sentiments.
“I will make time and come and see you. This call will make me come and see you because I’ve also been thinking about you and yearning to meet you,” Shatta Wale said, visibly touched by the legendary musician’s words.
The mutual respect between the two artists has drawn praise from fans and music lovers alike, with many celebrating the enduring impact of Agya Koo Nimo’s work and the openness of Shatta Wale to honour the music trailblazer.
Agya Koo Nimo, renowned for his contributions to Ghana’s Palmwine music tradition, is a towering figure in the country’s cultural history. His career spans decades, during which he has preserved and promoted traditional Ghanaian music through storytelling and masterful instrumentation.
The emotional moment comes amid growing calls to honour the highlife legend while he is still alive. Former President John Dramani Mahama, during the launch of the Black Star Experience on May 1, also stressed the importance of celebrating Agya Koo Nimo now.
“We watched the Palmwine music, and I asked if the king of Palmwine music was still alive, and I hear he’s alive,” Mahama said. “This is a man we must honour before he passes because that was a genre of music that has become a part of our musical archive and our folklore.”
