Aggrieved public sector workers call for 25% salary increment

The group has also accused the leadership of the labour unions of partnering with the government to exploit their members

A group calling itself the Coalition Against Leadership of Trades Union Congress and Organised Labour, is calling on the government to reconsider its decision of increasing salaries of public sector workers by 4%.

The group has also accused the leadership of the labour unions of partnering with the government to exploit their members.

This came to light when some aggrieved workers in the public service hit the streets of Accra in protest of the paltry increment.

The demonstration was organised after the leadership of organised labour came under criticism for accepting the 4$ salary increments instead of a proposed 25%.

The Executive Secretary of the Coalition Against Leadership of Trades Union Congress and Organised Labour, Emmanuel Azubila Salam, in an interview with Asaase News said the government has been unfair to public sector workers.

“Just like any other thing, the cost of rent has increased and our salaries have only been increased by 4% I believe it’s an insult. As a coalition that is representing the workers of this country, I believe the government has been insensitive and our labour union leaders are also sell outs.

“They sold us out to the government and this is why we are going to resist them. We have already sent our petition to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and we have petitioned the presidency. We are therefore awaiting a favourable response in the coming days,” Salam said.

The demonstration by the aggrieved public sector workers ended with the leadership presenting a petition to Parliament.

“It’s a killer percentage. ‘It’s an insult in the face of public sector workers and we call on the government to change the decision of that increment. We notified Parliament and we expect them to meet us for the petition. After the demonstration, there are many other activities that have been outlined as we await feedback from the government. The government will be surprised if it fails us.”
