Otumfuo at 25: Ghana Post to launch Asantehene commemorative stamps

Commemorative stamps serve as powerful tools to honour and remember significant figures in history

Ghana Post is set to launch a commemorative stamps embossed with the image of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to honor him on his silver jubilee celebration.

The commemorative stamps project aims to honour and memorialise the remarkable contributions of Otumfuo to the Asante Kingdom and Ghana as a whole.

The stamps will also serve as a symbol of his legacy for generations to come.

The Asantehene commemorative stamps are not merely postage stamps but symbols of cultural remembrance and historical appreciation.

They also embody the immortalisation of historical figures and events, ensuring that their legacies endure generations.

The Asantehene’s commemorative stamps hold immense significance both culturally and historically serving as a tangible tribute to the rich heritage and enduring legacy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Speaking at the launch, the managing director of Ghana Post, Bice Osei Kuffour said the commemorative stamps go beyond their functional role as postage stamps, as they stand as symbols of the deep respect and admiration that Ghana holds for Asante Kingdom and its esteemed leader.

He said the stamps which will be officially unveiled on 4 May 2024 at the Manhyia Palace in Ashanti Region will not only be a collector’s item but also an educational tool that offer insights into Ghana’s history, culture, and traditions.

“Let this stamp stand as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Ghanaians, a symbol of resilience to resist the oppressor’s rule and a reminder that our roots are the foundation upon which our future is built,” he said.

On his part, the chief director of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, Alexander Yaw Arphul who represented the sector minister, lauded Ghana Post for the initiative and emphasised that the introduction of the commemorative stamps is a reflection of Ghana’s National pride and identity.

Arphul said it will serve as a reminder of the inseparable link between Ghana’s traditional values and the modern aspirations.

He also appreciated the Asantehene for how impactful he has been to the country and Asanteman.

“This masterpiece is more than just a postage instrument. It is a tangible representation of the indelible mark Otumfuo has left for the of Ghana.”

“I applaud Ghana Post for their vision and dedication to this project. Through their efforts, we can now celebrate the legacy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II”, he added.

The Otumfuo commemorative stamp types include standard stamp- which will be definitive and commemorative, crypto stamp, stamp album, framed gold stamp and postcards.
