Court orders demolition of hotel belonging to Lionel Messi

Reports say Messi was not aware the hotel had been marked by authorities in Spain for demolition

A £26m four-star hotel known as MiM Sitges belonging to Lionel Messi is set to be demolished for not meeting the required building standards in Barcelona.

Messi also reportedly owns hotels in Ibiza and Majorca but has spent the majority of his life in Barcelona after first joining the club as a 13-year-old.

According to the report from Spain, the Argentine forward bought the MIM Sitges unaware that Sitges Town Hall had already ordered the demolition of the hotel due to its non-compliance with urban regulations.

The hotel’s balconies are believed to be too big and the building could be at risk.

Messi was not aware that the property had already been ordered for demolition when he bought it in 2017 and only became informed when El Confidencial approached him for comment, according to the Spanish newspaper.

Why is the hotel at risk of being demolished?

The hotel does not comply with the urban regulations because of its huge balconies.

The structure of the balconies of the hotel is rooted in the general construction of the building and to eliminate them, the entire hotel has to be demolished in order to make it comply with the urban regulations.

The fire emergency plan also reportedly fails to meet standards and the consequences of a possible fire could be dangerous.

The court order for the demolition of the hotel is currently pending but as things stand, the future of Messi’s hotel is very much in doubt.
