UNAIDS chief complains of racism at Geneva airport

Winnie Byanyima, from Uganda, said her documents were scrutinised repeatedly and calls made to check her status

The head of UNAIDS has just tweeted that she was nearly refused permission to board a flight in Switzerland.

Winnie Byanyima, from Uganda, said her documents were scrutinised repeatedly and calls made to check her status.

She said she was on her way to word Aids conference about to take place in Canada and was not the only person to face such scrutiny, which she said was racist.

“Hundreds of people in the South have been denied visas & won’t attend #UNAIDS2022 Unjust, racist!” her tweet said.
