Asamoah Gyan: I felt betrayed over Black Stars captaincy row

The 36-year-old striker says he felt betrayed after being stripped of the Black Stars captaincy in 2019 by former coach Kwesi Appiah

Asamoah Gyan has reiterated that he “felt betrayed” when coach Kwesi Appiah took the captain’s armband of the Black Stars from him and gave it to Andre Ayew in 2019.

“I felt betrayed [when the captain’s armband was taken from me in 2019] so I couldn’t control my emotions. People who know everything behind the scenes, know I was betrayed,” the all-time leading top scorer of the senior national football team said on The Asaase Breakfast Show.

“That’s all I can say,” Gyan told the host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on Tuesday 19 April 2022.

Gyan announced his retirement from the Black Stars after he was stripped of the captaincy position but backtracked when President Akufo-Addo intervened ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations that year.

The Baby Jet, as he is affectionately called, has made six appearances at the continental football showpiece since 2008 and has played in two finals in 2010 and 2015.

Gyan holds the record as the African player with the most goals (six) at the World Cup.
