Afenyo-Markin: CJ under attack, judiciary must unite

Speaking at a press briefing following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday (16 April), the Efutu MP alleged that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was seeking to politicise the judiciary

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a rallying call to members of the judiciary to resist what he described as politically motivated attempts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Speaking at a press briefing following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday (16 April), the Efutu MP alleged that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was seeking to politicise the judiciary.

“The judiciary should not be seen as part of the partisan political system in our country,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said. “What is happening is unacceptable. It is clear the NDC government wants to infiltrate the judiciary by making it partisan.”

The Minority Leader called on judges across the country to remain united and resist what he termed as “an orchestrated move” to remove the Chief Justice under questionable circumstances. He also urged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to break its silence and speak out against what he characterised as a threat to judicial independence.

His comments come amid ongoing legal efforts to block a process initiated by President John Mahama that could potentially lead to the Chief Justice’s removal.

The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of an injunction application challenging the procedure to May 6, after one of the five justices assigned to the case was absent when the matter was called.

The case, which has drawn public scrutiny and political commentary, centres on constitutional provisions for the removal of a sitting Chief Justice and the President’s role in that process.
