Afena-Gyan admits injury struggles at Cremonese

Afena-Gyan, 21, joined Cremonese who had just been promoted ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season, ending his stay with AS Roma after a breakthrough season

Cremonese forward Felix Afena-Gyan says injuries have hampered his time in the Italian Serie B in the 2023/24 season.

Afena-Gyan, 21 joined Cremonese who had just been promoted ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season, ending his stay with AS Roma after a breakthrough season.

He missed 11 games after fracturing the base of the fifth metatarsal of his left foot in training last September.

Since playing 13 minutes against Südtirol in March, Afena-Gyan has been on the bench five consecutive games  and on two occasions has not made the squad.

In two seasons, the former Roma striker is yet to score a league goal. All of his three goals have come in the Coppa Italia.

“It has been tough due to injuries and other things in our lives. And that’s football in this life as well. So yeah, as time goes on, like, things will get better,” Afena-Gyan said on TeamTalk.

“I’ll go back to my feet and give it my best. there is a lot of stress, mentally, physically but you know, that’s the job we chose. So I need to work on myself more and focus and see what the future has. That’s football. there’s always ups and downs,” he said.

The Mourinho relationship

Afena-Gyan won the heart of Jose Mourinho, the former AS Roma manager in November after he became the second-youngest debutant in the 2021/22 Serie A season- when he was brought on as a substitute against

Cagliari, turning the game around and helping his team secure all three points after trailing by a goal.

Jose Mourinho was named the new manager of Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce on 1 June 2024.

“We spoke I weeks ago when he signed for Fenerbache. I told him, Daddy, Congratulations. we have a good relationship,” Afena-Gyan said.

When asked about the possibility of joining the Portuguese manager in Turkey, Felix replied, “I don’t know”.
