Mahama to Paga-Pio: You’re a proactive and dynamic leader

The former president said the exemplary leadership maintained by Paga-Pio has proved very useful in matters of national development

The former president John Dramani Mahama has praised Pe Awiah Awumpaga II for his sterling leadership qualities as the paramount chief of the Paga Traditional Area.

Mahama said that through the distinguished leadership of the respected chief, the Paga area has witnessed tremendous growth in health, education and tourism in the past 50 years.

Speaking at Paga-Pio’s 50th-anniversary commemorative thanksgiving Mass in Paga, the former president added that the shining example of the chief has had a positive impact on not only his traditional area but the Upper East Region and Ghana as a whole.

Mahama said the chief’s exemplary leadership has proved very useful in resolving national development issues, adding that he was a worthy and reliable partner for development.

“The geographical location of Paga is so strategic that a proactive and dynamic leader like the Paga-Pio has proven very useful in our national security arrangements,” the former president said.

“This is especially critical as our state security agencies have found in him a worthy partner in this period, when the twin threats of terrorism and cross-border crime loom ominously over us.”

Mahama

Mahama noted that the chief’s resolve to develop Paga has prompted him to release land freely for the building of government offices and schools to boost education.

He extolled the Paga-Pio for his relentless efforts, which have gone a long way towards helping to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) from the traditional area.

“I am acutely aware, for instance, that Pe Awumpaga released land, free of charge, for the construction of the Paga Motel to boost tourism in the area and for the establishment of the Paga Senior High School,“ Mahama said.

“He mobilised the people of Paga to provide communal labour to build the Paga Health Centre, which has now become a district hospital. He donated one of his houses for use as a police station to enhance security in the area.

“Furthermore, through his efforts, Paga was the first traditional area in the region to abolish the obnoxious female genital mutilation (FGM).”
