Adwoa Safo heads to Gender, Asenso for Works and Housing as Akufo-Addo releases list today

Speculation has been rife, especially among former government appointees, about who will be appointed to serve in the new government

President Akufo-Addo is expected to release his list of ministerial appointments for his next government today (21 January), exactly two weeks after he was sworn in for a second term.

Sources at Jubilee House tell Asaase News that the MP for Dome Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region, who served as the minister of state responsible for procurement in Akufo-Addo’s first-term government, will be named as the substantive Minister-Designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Asaase News also gathers that Francis Asenso Boakye, the former deputy chief of staff and MP for Bantama in the Ashanti Region, will be nominated as the Minister-Designate for Works and Housing.

According to our sources, President Akufo-Addo intends to make housing a top priority of his second term.

Minister of Public Enterprises

The president has also pencilled in the MP for Tano North in Ahafo and former deputy minister of gender, children and social protection, Freda Prempeh, as the deputy minister-designate for works and housing to assist Asenso Boakye.

Joseph Cudjoe, a former deputy minister of energy, will be in charge of public enterprises, which will operate directly in the ambit of the Office of the President.

Our sources say that President Akufo-Addo’s yet-to-be-released list of ministers will feature fewer than 85 names.

It will be recalled that during his first term in office, he appointed 126 ministers and deputy ministers. By contrast, his immediate predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, appointed 88 during his term of office (7 January 2013 to 7 January 2017).

This move is expected to silence those who have criticised the president for having an what has been described as an “elephant-sized government” in his first term.
