The lawyer representing the former head of the National Signals Bureau Kwabena Adu Boahene has announced he will no longer engage in private communication with the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, citing fears of potential leaks and political misrepresentation.
Speaking after proceedings at the Accra high court on Friday (2 May), Samuel Atta Akyea said the decision was informed by recent developments in the case and the broader political climate.
“I’m careful lest I have a phone conversation, and somebody says that, oh, I’m trying to romance the Attorney General. There’s a precedent, and I’ve been around long enough,” Atta Akyea said.
“I don’t want to talk to the Attorney General, although we are very good friends, lest somebody might misinterpret it, and somebody might even go and leak a tape, tying it to hobnobbing with the Attorney General for some advantage. That is why I’m very quiet about it.”

His remarks come after the court ordered Adu Boahene to remain in EOCO custody for seven working days. The case has been adjourned to 13 May.
When asked whether he had completely severed communication with Dr Ayine, Atta Akyea responded: “I believe so.
“For now, I don’t believe I should be discussing anything with the Attorney General. And if there is anything he wants us to do outside of trial, maybe he should find a better way of doing it.
“I’m scared that the kind of propaganda in the public space can put any kind of spin or interpretation on any engagement. So I’m very, very careful.”
Atta Akyea has previously criticised the prosecution of his client, describing it as unjust.
“That is a travesty of justice, playing with the liberty of the individual,” he told journalists outside the court.
