Adrian Alter takes office as IMF resident representative in Ghana

Adrian Alter/IMF

The new resident representative for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Ghana, Adrian Alter, has formally assumed office effective 2 September 2025.

Alter succeeds Leandro Medina, who completed his three-year tenure for the IMF last month. Dr Alter arrived in Accra ahead of time in August to support a smooth transition process before officially beginning his assignment.

A seasoned economist, Alter has worked extensively on global macroeconomic and financial stability issues. He previously served as a senior economist at the IMF, contributing to policy work on monetary policy, sovereign debt and macroeconomic stabilisation in countries such as Tunisia and Serbia.

His professional background also includes positions at the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank and UBS Investment Bank, where he specialised in finance, banking and economic policy analysis.

Alter holds a PhD in quantitative economics and finance from the University of Konstanz in Germany and an MSc in finance from HEC Lausanne in Switzerland. He has also completed executive training in financial stability at the Yale School of Management in the United States.

In his role as resident representative, Alter will co-ordinate the IMF’s work in Ghana, including oversight of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme, and maintain dialogue with the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Ghana and other key stakeholders.

His appointment comes at a time when Ghana is implementing reforms under the IMF-supported programme, aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, enhancing revenue mobilisation and addressing debt challenges.
