Lawyer Kwame Adofo has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over the detention of legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, describing the process as “illogical” and a misuse of power.
Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (6 December) Kwame Adofo questioned why Kpebu was invited to the OSP after publicly alleging corruption against the officeholder.
He highlighted inconsistencies in the investigation, saying that Kpebu’s statements suggested either collusion or false claims, yet the Special Prosecutor expected him to assist in investigating himself.
“Can you believe that? This doesn’t make sense, and it should never have been extended to him,” Adofo said, adding that the invitation itself, and Kpebu’s acceptance, were both wrong.
He suggested that if an independent body had been involved, the scenario would have been more appropriate.
Adofo also criticised subsequent accusations against Kpebu, including obstruction of duty, calling them “comical” and a misuse of authority.
“Now they have found a way to create a problem for him. Now he has been accused of obstruction of an officer from doing his work. What work? these are “comicals” we saw last week. That was a complete joke and that is why he ended up detaining Martin.”
The comments come amid growing scrutiny of the OSP’s actions, following Kpebu’s detention and the broader debate over the office’s mandate and independence in handling high-profile corruption cases in Ghana.
