Adentan floods claim three lives after heavy downpour – MCE confirms

Three lives have been lost in the Adentan Municipality following hours of heavy rainfall on Sunday (18 May), which caused severe flooding across parts of Accra.

Residents of Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon were among the worst affected, with floodwaters sweeping through homes and leaving roads submerged.

In Nanakrom, a four-year-old girl was among the casualties, while a man lost his life near New Legon. Two other deaths were confirmed at Lakeside.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Adenta, Ella Esiman Nongo, confirmed the fatalities during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday (19 May), describing the extent of destruction as “deeply worrying.”

The rains, which started around 3:00 p.m. and lasted nearly three hours, inundated several communities across the capital, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema.

The Odaw drain, a key stormwater channel in central Accra, overflowed its banks, compounding the flooding situation.

In Adentan, emergency teams were deployed to rescue stranded residents, especially in low-lying areas like Ashiyie.

According to her, there is no proper exit route for water because people are building on waterways stressing that the municipality continues to face challenges due to unregulated construction and encroachment on water paths.

She has called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and a coordinated effort to address the root causes of flooding across the Greater Accra Region.
