Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with a jewellery shop robbery in the Adabraka area of Accra, authorities said on Friday.
The suspects, identified as Hamza Agerego, also known as Nene Bawku or Lambert, and Alhassan Elliasu, also known as Arab Man, were apprehended on 7 January at hideouts in Ashaiman.
Agerego was initially detained at the Katamanso District Police Headquarters in relation to the robbery. Acting on intelligence, police conducted an operation at Ashaiman, leading to Elliasu’s arrest.
Search
A search of the suspects’ hideouts yielded two pump-action guns, 43 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 239 BB cartridges, four bulletproof vests, a black boot, a black face mask, two cutlasses, two Samsung mobile phones, one iPhone 13, a wristwatch, and a CCTV monitor.
Both men remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations. Authorities said they would be charged in court to face the full rigours of the law.
Key suspect
Meanwhile, police had earlier picked up a key suspect in connection with the attack, bringing the number of arrests to three.
The suspect, identified as Salim Mohammed, also known as Fawata, was arrested on 20 November at a hospital in Ashaiman, where he had gone to seek medical treatment after months of intelligence-led police operations, according to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor.
Police said the stolen cash was the proceeds of a gold transaction and was being transported to a bank at the time of the attack.
