Ghana’s Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Saturday called for stronger leadership, innovation and technology in the justice system as the country’s Judiciary opened the 2025–2026 Legal Year.
Speaking at a special church service marking the start of the 68th Legal Year, Baffoe-Bonnie urged judges, lawyers and judicial staff to remain committed to their constitutional roles and to ensure justice is felt in the daily lives of Ghanaians.
“Ours is a country of laws, and collectively, we are the essential tool in ensuring that it continues to remain so,” he said. “Justice delayed is not merely justice denied — it is trust betrayed. We cannot afford that betrayal.”
The Judiciary has retained the theme “Building the Pillars of Justice Delivery through Leadership, Innovation and Technology” for a second year to underscore its relevance.
Baffoe-Bonnie said leadership in the justice sector required “moral courage, integrity and a willingness to drive reform”, while urging judicial officers to lead with humility and impartiality.
On reforms, he highlighted persistent challenges such as case backlogs, procedural delays and limited resources, saying innovation was needed to “simplify court processes, empower vulnerable groups, and enhance public trust.”
He also stressed the growing role of technology in justice delivery, citing virtual hearings, e-filing and digital case management as crucial to modernisation. But he cautioned that digitisation must be inclusive.
“Technology must not create new divides between those who can access it and those who cannot,” he said.
The new Legal Year will focus on deepening reforms, expanding digital infrastructure and improving access to justice nationwide, according to the Judiciary.
