Strive for success to match men, MzVee urges female artistes

The Ghanaian dancehall artiste Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda, best known by her stage name MzVee, has urged women in show business to strive to attain more success to match up to their male counterparts.

‘‘As women, we have to work twice as hard as the guys because we come with a lot of baggage. But I think this year has been one serious year for women in entertainment in Ghana.

“I think we can only move onward and upward from there as women in the entertainment industry,” she said.

New single

MzVee’s music, which also has elements of Afropop and R’n’B, has penetrated the international market, winning her multiple awards and remarkable international collaborations.

Her strong vocal abilities have also earned her big nominations such as Best International Act (Africa) in the BET Awards.

In an exclusive interview with Asaase Radio, the former Lynx Entertainment signee talked about her new single, “Baby”.

‘‘‘Baby’ is a love song. I believe love and hate are the biggest things which drive the world. So I decided to sing about love because I always preach love.

“It’s one song that can express deep love among spouses,” she said.

Alleged friction

Lately there has seemed to be friction between the face of “Come and See My Mother” and her former label mate Kuami Eugene.

Some fans claim she was curiously silent on the “Open Gate” hitmaker’s VGMA Artiste of the Year award.

However, MzVee says this is not the case and she insists that there is no friction.

‘‘There is no friction between us [myself and Kuami Eugene]. I have spoken about him several times, congratulated him in subsequent interviews.

“I have said time and again that if anyone is nominated for such categories, it means that fellow has worked hard and deserves to be rewarded. I believe Kuami Eugene deserves the ultimate award,” she said.

Although she had gone on a two-year music break, the “Davi” singer bounced back early this year following her exit from Lynx Entertainment.

MzVee described how it feels to be independent since her exit from her former record label.

‘‘It was scary at the beginning because I was baby-sat for a long time. But to come out and do things on my own feels good and I am loving every second of it now,” she said.

Asaase Sound Clash

At the début Asaase Sound Clash on 12 September MzVee opened the show with an electrifying performance.

She expressed her thoughts about the event, dubbed the Clash2CrushCOVID.

“I think it’s amazing and entertaining. I think people want to watch artistes go head-to-head just to fight.

“But this was for a good cause and it was fun. Asaase Radio has done a good job,” she said.
