The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, is facing allegations of vote buying after being captured in a video purportedly handing out money to voters during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday.
According to eyewitness footage seen by Asaase News, the mayor was seen interacting with several voters after they cast their ballots and is alleged to have distributed GHC 100 notes to some of them.
The alleged incident occurred near one of the polling stations within the constituency.
The rerun has drawn national attention, with heightened scrutiny from political observers, civil society, and the Electoral Commission.
Critics say the alleged actions of the mayor may constitute electoral malpractice, particularly under Ghana’s electoral laws, which prohibit inducement of voters before, during, or after elections.
The money is said to have been handed out in favour of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, who is contesting the seat. However, it remains unclear whether the alleged actions were coordinated with the candidate or sanctioned by the party.
Neither Mayor Allotey nor the NDC has publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of publication. Repeated attempts by Asaase News to contact representatives from both the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the NDC’s communication team have been unsuccessful.
Electoral observers monitoring the Ablekuma North rerun have called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident swiftly and transparently.
