Accra-Kumasi Highway: overspeeding blamed as nine die in Sprinter-truck crash

Nine people, including five children, have been confirmed dead in a fatal road crash that occurred on Monday afternoon (25 August) at Akawanda No 2 near Kokofu on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

Divisional Officer II Samuel Mantey, municipal director of the Ghana National Fire Service, confirmed the tragedy in an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (27 August).

According to DOII Mantey, the crash happened around 1.45pm when a Man Diesel truck, with registration number GN 114-21 and travelling from Kumasi to Accra, attempted to overtake another vehicle. In the process, the truck veered into the lane of a Sprinter bus with registration number AW 4619-14, which was heading from Accra towards Kumasi with passengers on board.

“The truck, in trying to overtake, hit the rail and crashed head-on into the Sprinter bus. Many people lost their lives instantly,” Mantey said.

The Fire Service, working with the police and the National Ambulance Service, evacuated victims trapped in the mangled bus. Seven people, including five children, died on the spot. Two others later died in hospital, bringing the total fatalities to nine.

Mantey added that several survivors sustained critical injuries, including a two-year-old girl who is receiving emergency treatment. Other injured victims were transported to the Kokofu Government Hospital and nearby facilities for care.

Preliminary investigations suggest overspeeding played a role in the crash. “The Man Diesel truck was overtaking at top speed, and the Sprinter bus was also speeding. That combination made the collision more deadly,” Mantey said.

The incident adds to the growing number of deadly accidents recorded this year on the busy Accra-Kumasi Highway, one of Ghana’s most accident-tainted routes.
