Six people have died and several others were injured in a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise on Wednesday, the military said in a statement.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a large crowd of applicants surged toward the gates before the scheduled screening, breaching security barriers and triggering panic among the thousands gathered.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates,” the statement said.
The GAF confirmed that six potential recruits lost their lives, while many others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
The military said medical teams were “working tirelessly to stabilise affected individuals” and that families of the deceased were being contacted.
The army expressed its condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
“Further updates will be communicated,” said Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations of the Ghana Navy, who signed the release.
