A sanitation court in Accra has convicted seven people for open defecation and dumping refuse in unauthorized areas, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) said on Tuesday.
The convicts — identified as Albert Quaye, Kwame Owusu Ansah, Daniel Nunoo, Razak Siedu, Haruna Abdul Rauf, Desmond Okeyika, and Moro Sebere — were each fined 50 penalty units, equivalent to 600 Ghana cedis, or face three months in prison if they fail to pay, the AMA said in a statement.
Presiding judge Rosemond Vera Aryeetey handed down the sentences after the individuals were found guilty of violating public health and sanitation laws.
Prosecutor Nii Okine Aryee told the court that the offenders were apprehended by Public Health Officers during a special enforcement operation on 7 October led by Florence Kuukyi, the Assembly’s Chief Environmental Health Officer.
The AMA has stepped up enforcement against poor sanitation practices in recent months as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness in the capital, where illegal dumping and open defecation remain persistent challenges.
