Abronye arrest linked to offensive conduct, say police

Kwame Baffoe, aka Abronye DC/New Patriotic Party (NPP)/misdemeanour

The Ghana Police Service said on Monday (8 September 2025) that it had arrested Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, on charges of offensive conduct likely to breach the peace. Abronye, who chairs the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region, was taken into custody on 8 September and will be brought before a court, a police statement said.

No further details were provided about the nature of the alleged offence.

Whereabouts unclear

However, Abronye’s lawyer, Daniel Martey Addo, said the whereabouts of his client had become unclear after he was detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.

“My client was arrested at the CID Headquarters after responding to an invitation. He was formally charged with breach of public peace and publication of false statements, which he denied,” Addo told The Big Bulletin on Asaase Radio.

He added that after the charges, Abronye was moved from the CID building under unusual circumstances.

“Before I returned to the ground floor, my client had been driven away. I was told he was being moved to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), but when I got there, officials said they had no record of him,” Addo said.

Police have not commented on the lawyer’s claims.

Political asylum

Abronye had formally applied for political asylum abroad, alleging escalating persecution and threats to his life under President John Mahama’s administration.

In a letter dated 5 September 2025, addressed to several embassies and asylum organisations, the NPP regional chairman said that he had been “unlawfully arrested and detained” in February after publicly criticising the government.

He claimed that the security agencies, acting under the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, had threatened him with further reprisals if he did not stop speaking out.

“Since my release, I have received persistent threats – both verbal and electronic – from individuals linked to the ruling party,” Abronye wrote, adding that a man identifying himself as a police investigator had warned he would be “dealt with mercilessly” if he refused to comply with a summons.

IGP accused

Abronye has further accused the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, of focusing on vocal individuals in the NPP and other opposition parties while ignoring the growing insecurity highlighted by a recently published Global Peace Index report.

He said confidential sources within the Police Service had informed him of plans to arrest and brutalise him.

His asylum application was sent to the embassies of countries including Canada, the United States, the UK, Germany, France and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as UN agencies in Accra.
