Parliament rejects plans for Ghana to open three new embassies

In a Facebook post, North Tongu MP Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government cannot execute capital intensive projects in times of economic crisis

The Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament has blocked plans by the government to reconstruct the Accra International Conference Centre at a cost of GHC1.3 billion and to open new Ghanaian embassies in Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (21 December), North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government cannot execute capital intensive projects in the midst of the current economic crisis.

“NDC MPs both at the Foreign Affairs Committee and at plenary last night have effectively scuttled governmentā€™s 2023 plans to demolish the Accra International Conference Centre and construct a new one at a staggering ā‚¬116million (GHS1.3billion).

“We also successfully blocked proposals to open new Ghanaian embassies in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Government cannot be defaulting on its loan obligations and imposing crude haircuts, particularly on pensions for the vulnerable aged and still be pursuing fanciful projects which can be deferred to better economic times in the future,” Ablakwa posted.
