Ho: Journalists trained to counter disinformation

The training was initiated by Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) with funding support from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom

Selected journalists from the Eastern, Oti and Volta regions have received a two-day training in Ho on how to counter misinformation and disinformation.

The training was initiated by Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) with funding support from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom.

The training focused on misinformation and disinformation, its types and impact on peace, stability and democratic consolidation in Ghana; and fact-checking verification tools using technology.

Theodora Dame Adjin-Tettey, a senior journalist with the Fourth Estate and a lecturer at the Department of Communication Studies of the University of Ghana, and Seth Bokpe, a senior reporter with the Fourth Estate, facilitated the training.

Bokpe urged journalists to prioritise fact-checking in their field and be agents of accurate information.

Twenty-five journalists, including morning show hosts, English and local language reporters and senior journalists, participated in the workshop.

A similar training is on-going in Greater Accra, Western and Central Regions today and tomorrow (16 and 17 March). A total of 130 journalists will have been trained by end of the project titled “countering mis-disinformation and propaganda narratives through fact-checking and media campaigns.”
