Ablekuma North dispute: Don’t sacrifice your integrity to appease NDC – Frimpong Kodua to EC

Kodua expressed shock that the Commission is now calling for a rerun in 19 polling stations, describing the move as “capricious, whimsical, and politically suspicious"

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of compromising its integrity in the ongoing Ablekuma North election dispute.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (5 June), Mr. Kodua described the EC’s latest decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations as a dangerous reversal of its previously clear and documented position.

He claims the EC has bowed to political pressure from the NDC after earlier confirming that only three polling stations remained to be collated, a process the NPP says would declare their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, the winner.

“Our position has been consistent. There are only three polling stations left, and once those are collated, Nana Akua Afriyie should be declared MP for Ablekuma North,” Kodua said.

Kodua expressed shock that the Commission is now calling for a rerun in 19 polling stations, describing the move as “capricious, whimsical, and politically suspicious.”

“The EC must tell Ghanaians what has changed. Why this U-turn? Is it because the NDC is threatening them?” he asked.

Dangerous precedent

He accused the EC of setting a dangerous precedent, suggesting that political parties could now disrupt elections and use chaos as a basis to demand reruns, undermining the very fabric of Ghana’s democratic process.

“This action tells political actors that if you are losing, just unleash thugs to disrupt the process and then call for a rerun. That’s not how we build a democracy,” he warned.

Court action

The NPP has since filed an injunction in court to stop the EC from proceeding with the planned rerun, maintaining that the original collation process must be completed using verified pink sheets already in possession of party agents and presiding officers.

Kodua also questioned the silence of the NDC on their own pink sheets, asking why the party has not submitted its own records if it believes it won the seat.

“If the NDC had won, where are their pink sheets? What is the EC afraid of? The EC Chair must stand firm, even if the NDC wants her removed. At least posterity will remember her for standing by the truth,” he added.
