Shasha Marley: My dad wanted me to become a lawyer

The “Maata" hitmaker who has been off the music scene for a while recently released a new song titled ‘Spintex Road Traffic Jam’.

Ghanaian reggae artiste, Julius Amua-Sekyi,  also known as Shasha Marley has said his father had wanted him to become a legal practitioner.

The song, which is appropriate for all audiences, calls to action for the nation’s transportation authorities to ensure unhindered traffic flow.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (20 March), Shasha Marley said what keeps him going is his calling.

“My friend from Zimbabwe gave me the name Shasha. The Reggae I was doing, the other guys added the Marley to it.”

“My father wanted me to be a lawyer. I grew up in a Christian home… what kept me going was my calling. When God calls you for a job he makes you fit for it”

About Shasha Marley 

Julius Amua-Sekyi commonly known by his stage name, Shasha Marley is a Ghanaian reggae singer. He has been in the music industry since his teenage days.

Shasha Marley was born in Sekondi-Takoradi, as Julius Amua-Sekyi.

His father was a retired educationist and choirmaster in their local church in Komenda in the Central Region.

He studied at St John’s Secondary in Sekondi between 1978 and 1983. He played in the school’s band known as Mathew Chapter 5.

He joined the music industry immediately after his high school education.

Shasha is also referred to as a monk on the loose due to his stage monk-like outfit.

His attire is credited to Franciscan Friars. The singer finds St. Francis of Assisi a true inspiration. He has been in the music industry for quite a while and earned a huge fan base.

The singer was inspired by other famous artists such as Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Steel Paulse, and Jimmy Cliff.

He released his debut song, “Tell Freedom” which became a hit immediately upon its release. He continued to release hit after hit thus gaining popularity in the African music industry.

Some of Shasha Marley songs are: I’m Not Ashamed of the Gospel; Twin City Mafia; Queens of Queens; So Nyame Mu; Maata.

Shasha led fifteen top Ghanaian artists in an all-star musical collaboration that was released through the Johns Hopkins University’s sponsorship.

The musical was produced to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.
