Ghanaian military personnel have arrested a suspected gunman during a dawn security operation in Binduri, near the conflict-prone town of Bawku, as part of intensified efforts to quell ongoing violence in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the arrest was made in the early hours of Monday, 21 April 2025, after troops deployed at Binduri responded to sporadic gunshots near the central market. A combined force from the 11 Mechanised Battalion, the Joint Task Force, and the Police swiftly cordoned off the area and conducted a meticulous search.
During the operation, the suspect was apprehended and immediately handed over to the police for interrogation.
A significant cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered at the scene, including an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, an empty M16 magazine, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, and 128 rounds of G3 ammunition. Also found were a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a helmet, and a pair of military-style boots.
Later that same day, troops foiled an attempted infiltration by unknown gunmen, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The attackers fled the area, and no casualties were reported.
The military described the situation in Binduri as under control, though personnel remain on high alert.
“The Ghana Armed Forces, working closely with other security agencies, remain committed to safeguarding the peace and security of Bawku,” the statement said, calling on residents to cooperate with ongoing efforts to restore calm.
