Tennis: GTF to introduce “Tennis in Schools” in Kyebi

The Ghana Tennis Federation will roll out the scheme following the opening of the Sophia Ofori-Atta Sports Centre complex

The Ghana Tennis Federation is poised to introduce its flagship youth programme “Tennis in Schools” in the Abuakwa South Municipality.

This follows the opening of a new sports complex in Abuakwa South.

On Saturday, the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, officially opened the Sophia Ofori-Atta Sports Centre, a multipurpose complex in Kyebi.

Named after the late princess of the Akyem Abuakwa State Sophia Afia Kyerewaa Ofori-Atta, the facility has two standard-sized tennis courts, a basketball court, a badminton court and a standard-sized football pitch.

Speaking at the ceremony, the president of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Isaac Aboagye Duah, disclosed that the construction of the facility fits in with the Federation’s plan.

“We have a programme called Tennis in Schools, which is run by PM Sports. So we are going to make the necessary arrangements for it to be introduced to Kyebi.

“Previously, Koforidua was the only city in the Eastern Region where this was rolled out, but we will soon add Kyebi,” he said.

Tennis in Schools targets students in Ghana’s basic schools, delivering high-quality training to hone their talent and interest in the sport.

Currently, the programme is in operation in the Greater Accra, Central and Eastern Regions through a collaboration between the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Tennis Federation.

Issac Aboagye Duah also thanked Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, the sponsor of the facility, for the gesture.

“The main challenge with a lot of our policies is the infrastructural and human resource deficit. Without these facilities, it is impossible to do anything in sports,” he said.

“I would like to thank Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko for this facility. We appreciate this better than most because we know how hard it is to get such facilities constructed. And it is not just us, because the Badminton and Basketball Federations can take advantage and roll out their programmes,” Aboagye Duah said.
