9th Parliament: NPP MPs prove their worth, even in small numbers – Ahmed Shaib

Shaib said that a productive opposition—though small in numbers—could still ensure accountability and balance in Ghana’s democracy

Deputy Minority Chief Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe Jerry Ahmed Shaib has insisted that even a small group of NPP legislators in Parliament can play a decisive role in shaping national policy—if their arguments are grounded in substance and national interest.

Many Ghanaians have questioned the influence and relevance of the current Minority in Parliament. With the NPP occupying fewer seats than the NDC, some observers have expressed concern that key legislative decisions could be rushed through without adequate scrutiny.

But speaking on Atumpan on AsaasePa Radio on Wednesday, 16 April, Shaib stated that as few as five NPP Members of Parliament could influence decisions involving more than 180 opposition NDC MPs, so long as their interventions are clear, credible, and constructive.

“Five NPP people can cause more problems with about 187 NDC people,” he said. “Why? Because if there are a few things they see as crucial, and they raise them and maintain that what is being brought on board makes sense, people accept their concerns.”

Shaib said that a productive opposition—though small in numbers—could still ensure accountability and balance in Ghana’s democracy.

“It would be better for you to rather understand and work with them so that government business will not be impeded,” he added.
