King Promise: I am disappointed I did not win award at VGMA

Gregory Nii Bortey Newman, better known as King Promise, has said he was disappointed over his inability to pick an award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) last Saturday (7 May).

“I won’t lie,” the 26-year-old told Caroline Sampson on Asaase Radio on Tuesday (10 May). “I’m very disappointed I didn’t get an award on Saturday.”

However, he said he felt fulfilled performing at the VGMA that night.

“Being on stage and performing for fans is the most special thing for me. I have no beef with them that’s why I performed at the event, if it were some other artiste, he/she might not have performed.

“Honestly, I don’t know what the problem is. I don’t know why I haven’t been receiving awards after nominations on VGMA. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t know anybody on the board,” King Promise said on Asaase Radio‘s Café 995.

“We are trying to push Ghana music to the world, but you come back home and you are not supported.”

The Nigerian factor

The “slow down” hitmaker praised Nigerians for going all out and supporting their artistes.

“If anything is Nigerian, they go all out for it and obviously they have the numbers too, not just the numbers they actually push and support their own.

“When you go to a club anywhere in the world, and you see a Nigerian man there they will make sure whichever DJ is there, is playing at least one Nigerian song,” King Promise said.

“That’s how that thing started in the UK. When it comes to Afrobeats, Nigerians are basically the front runners. My top three Nigerian artistes in the world will be Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido. I think they’ve worked hard along the years even when I was a student in school they were topping charts,” King Promise said.
