66th Independence Day: Guinea-Bissau president is Ghana’s special guest

The chairman of the national planning committee for the 66th Independence Day celebration, Lord Commey, has said 5,000 guests have been invited from across the world to grace the occasion.

The celebration, which is on the theme: “Our unity, our strength, our purpose” will be held at the newly constructed youth resource centre in Adaklu Tsrefe, a suburb of Ho. It is a 10,000-seater stadium with auxiliary facilities.

The special guest of honour for the occasion is the president of Guinea-Bissau, Úmaro Sissoco Embaló, who is the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States.

He assumed office as president on 27 February 2020. He served as prime minister from 2016 to 2018.

Speaking at the launch of the celebration in Ho on Tuesday (21 February), Lord Commey said members of the diplomatic community, including heads of state, chiefs and other notable individuals are among the 5,000 invited guests.

He added that the celebration will last for 12 days from Saturday 25 February to Friday 10 March, marked with various activities.

At the launch, the Volta regional minister, Archibald Yao Letsa, said the various local committees that have been set up to oversee the celebration are working “day and night” to ensure that it is a “memorable one”.

He appealed to the people in the region and all Ghanaians to unite in the celebration devoid of partisan politics. He said the region has the opportunity to showcase its rich culture to the world.

The hospitality industry has started making gains ahead of the celebration. Hoteliers say their facilities have been fully booked.

Twenty-two contingents including cadet corps from second cycle institutions in the Volta Region will be at the parade.
