Ejisu by-election: Claims of manipulation baseless, says EC

Voting is currently underway in the Ejisu by-election in the Ashanti Region amid allegations of manipulation

The Electoral Commission has described as baseless claims by the former Member of Parliament contesting in the Ejisu by-election as a sole candidate that the NPP will manipulate the polls.

Accusations levelled against the governing party by the MP’s team include claims of ballot box stuffing, attempted bribery of officials and the use of intimidation tactics to influence the electoral process.

The claims which emerged from the camp of Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, an independent candidate also include plans by the NPP to transport unqualified senior high school students to partake in the exercise and orchestrate power outages during counting.

However, reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (30 April), the Ashanti regional director of the EC, Benjamin Banor-Bio said the former MP’s team may be ignorant of the electoral process.

“When people make such allegations, it tells you that maybe they are not conversant with the systems in place. Our system is so transparent.”

“There is no way anybody could cheat without it being detected. So if somebody is saying the Electoral Commission is skewing the system in favour of a candidate or against a candidate the media must ask the person at what level are they [Electoral Commission] going to cheat…” he said.
