The Ghana Police Service has deployed 460 officers to ensure order and safety as the one-week observance for the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, takes place today in Kumasi.
Large crowds are expected at Manhyia Palace, where traditional rites will be performed in honour of the Asantehemaa, the late queen mother of the Ashanti kingdom.
Regional police say officers drawn from various units have been stationed at key entry points, ceremonial grounds and adjoining streets.
DSP Godwin Ahianyor, spokesman for the Ashanti Regional Police, told reporters that many roads leading to the palace would be closed to traffic to allow the smooth conduct of the event.
The restricted routes include St Anne’s Anglican Church Road, Manhyia Bonjour Road, Sumankwahene’s Road and the road near Nick Petroleum filling station.
“The police have put in place robust security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and incident-free event,” a spokesperson confirmed.
The Amoamanhene, Nana Agyenim Boateng, who chairs the planning committee, said a ban had been placed on funeral activities during the observance, but trading in the city would not be affected.
The Asantehemaa is revered as a central figure in Ashanti tradition. Nana Konadu Yiadom III was also the elder sister of the Asantehene.
Her death has attracted condolences from across Ghana and beyond, with thousands anticipated at the palace to pay their respects.
